ELIZABETH MC
CRUDDEN – GEORGE MULRANEY
CHILDREN
CATHERINE – NELLIE
– ANN - MARY – JAMES - ELIZABETH
In the last blog I wrote about CATHERINE and this time I will write about ANN OR ANNIE as she is mentioned in census and death records.
I will start with her obituary notice in the San Francisco
Chronicle dated 26 August 1941
SLYTER – In this city,
August 25, 1941, Annie J. Mulreany, beloved wife of the late Byron J. Slyter,
loving mother of Elizabeth Slyter and Mrs. Alice Gibbons daughter of the late
George and Elizabeth Mulreany, sister of Mrs. Nellie Schweitzer, Mrs. Bessie
Tamony and the late James
Mulreany. Catherine Powers and Mollie
Roberson.
Friends are invited to
attend the funeral Wednesday at 9 am from McAvoy, OHara Co. Market street near
Church thence to St. Anthony’s Church where requiem high mass will be
celebrated at 9:30 am Interment Holy
Cross Cemetery
I know starting with end of her life is a little strange but
this obituary gave me the clues to search for ANNIE in the census after she left the home of her parents GEORGE and ELIZABETH MULRANEY. ANNIE is in the 1900 and 1910 census at
2118 Bryant St. , San Francisco , with her parents and sisters
and brother.
This 1900 California Census indicates her birth was in March
of 1882 and she was born in California .

1910 California
Census – Mulraney Family
In 1920 ANNIE’S
father and mother had died so I had to look for her by herself or married. Until I found the obituary listing her
husband’s name I hadn’t found her. Now I
have her in the 1920 census with her husband, BYRON SLYTER and two daughters ELIZABETH
born about 1918 and ALICE born in
1919. They are living on Cobridge
Street in San
Francisco .
I also found the World War 1 Draft Registration for BYRON
SLYTER dated 11 September 1918 which indicates he is married to ANNIE. This document now narrows down
when ANNIE and BYRON SLYTER married, sometime between 1910 and 1918.
ANNIE is listed
in the 1930 census with her husband and children still living in San Francisco but at 93 Justin Street .
ANNIE’S husband BRYON SLYTER died 28 February 1939
according to the

ANNIE is in the
1940 California Census still living at 93 Justin Street with her two daughters, ELIZABETH and ANNIE both single.
I found that ANNIE
died 25 August 1941 from the California Death Index and also from her obituary
in the San Francisco Chronicle.
At the time of her death, as indicated in the obituary, ANNIE’S daughter ELIZABETH has not married. Her other daughter is listed as MRS. ALICE GIBBONS. I researched this daughter and found a marriage
record for her to a MYLOW PATTERSON.
I never found a marriage record for ALICE
and someone named Gibbons. I did find a
divorce record for an ALICE GIBBONS and
a WILLIAM GIBBONS filed 20 July 1943
and granted 28 July 1943 in San
Francisco . If
this is the right ALICE, she was
married sometime between the 1940 census taken in April 1940 and this divorce
in July 1943. This might explain why she
went back to using her maiden name.
