CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH MC CRUDDEN AND GEORGE MULRANEY CONTINUED

ELIZABETH MC CRUDDEN – GEORGE MULRANEY

CHILDREN

CATHERINE – NELLIE – ANN - MARY – JAMES – ELIZABETH

NELLIE MULRANEY also known as ELLEN and HELEN was born September 6, 1882 in San Francisco, California.

The first time I find her in a document is the 1900 California Census listed with her parents and siblings; Nellie is 17 at the time and it indicates her birth is September of 1882.  The family lived at 2118 Bryant Street in San Francisco at the time.  This census lets us know that Nellie was working as a finisher of woolens.

NELLIE marries EDWARD CHARLES SCHWEITZER on April 27, 1905 in San Francisco.  (California County Marriage 1850-1952, FHL Film #974858) As you can see from this index NELLIE is using the spelling of her last name as MULREANY.  I find this spelling used by all the children of ELIZABETH AND GEORGE MULRANEY.

In the 1910 California Census NELLIE and EDWARD have 3 children ADRIENNE age 4, EDWARD C. JR. age 3 and GEORGE I age 1 ½ years old.  They are living right next door to her parents, who are still living at the 2118 Bryant Street address.  NELLIE and EDWARD are at 2116 Bryant Street. This census indicates that EDWARD is an iron molder.

The next census in 1920, NELLIE and EDWARD have 2 more children ALICE age 9 and JAMES age 7.  They are still living on Bryant Street but at 2580.  NELLIE’S parents have both died and her siblings have married and moved from the 2118 Bryant Street home.

1920 California Census

In the 1930 census the family is living at 804A Lyon St., San Francisco and they have just 2 sons living with them, JAMES who is 17 now and FRANCIS age 10.

1930 California Census

By the 1940 census NELLIE is a widow.  EDWARD died January 24, 1934 and is buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, California.  NELLIE, who is listed as 60 years old,  is living at 321 Richland Avenue, San Francisco with two of her sons, JAMES age 26 and FRANK age 21. Both sons state that they are butchers.  This census also indicates they were living at this address in 1935 also.

1940 California Census

NELLIE dies November 19, 1947 in San Francisco and is buried in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

I have found some information on NELLIE and EDWARD’S children.

EDWARD was born November, 23, 1906 in San Francisco. In the 1940 census he indicates that he is married to EDITH LAURIER. I know his wife’s last name because her sister is living with them and she is single. Since the 1940 census is the last one we are able to view I don’t know if they have any children after this date.  Edward died on April 8, 1982 and is buried in the same cemetery as his parents.

ADRIENNE who was born about 1906 married ANDREW BELL about 1930.  ANDREW BELL was a policeman in San Francisco and had many articles about him in the San Francisco Chronicle Newspaper during his career.  ADRIENNE and ANDREW had 2 children CATHERINE born in 1931 and ADRIENNE born in 1933.  ADRIENNE (the mother) died April 21, 2003 at the age of 97. ANDREW died in 1961.

I haven’t research the other children of NELLIE and EDWARD yet.

The documents I have used were found on the following web sites.

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH MC CRUDDEN & GEORGE MULRANEY/MULREANY CONTINUED

ELIZABETH MC CRUDDEN – GEORGE MULRANEY

CHILDREN

CATHERINE – NELLIE – ANN - MARY – JAMES - ELIZABETH

In the last blog I wrote about CATHERINE and this time I will write about ANN OR ANNIE as she is mentioned in census and death records.

I will start with her obituary notice in the San Francisco Chronicle dated 26 August 1941

SLYTER – In this city, August 25, 1941, Annie J. Mulreany, beloved wife of the late Byron J. Slyter, loving mother of Elizabeth Slyter and Mrs. Alice Gibbons daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Mulreany, sister of Mrs. Nellie Schweitzer, Mrs. Bessie Tamony and the late James Mulreany.  Catherine Powers and Mollie Roberson.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral Wednesday at 9 am from McAvoy, OHara Co. Market street near Church thence to St. Anthony’s Church where requiem high mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am Interment   Holy Cross Cemetery

I know starting with end of her life is a little strange but this obituary gave me the clues to search for ANNIE in the census after she left the home of her parents GEORGE and ELIZABETH MULRANEY.  ANNIE is in the 1900 and 1910 census at 2118 Bryant St., San Francisco, with her parents and sisters and brother.

This 1900 California Census indicates her birth was in March of 1882 and she was born in California.

1910 California Census – Mulraney Family

In 1920 ANNIE’S father and mother had died so I had to look for her by herself or married.  Until I found the obituary listing her husband’s name I hadn’t found her.  Now I have her in the 1920 census with her husband, BYRON SLYTER and two daughters ELIZABETH born about 1918 and ALICE born in 1919. They are living on Cobridge Street in San Francisco.

I also found the World War 1 Draft Registration for            BYRON SLYTER dated 11 September 1918 which indicates he is married to ANNIE. This document now narrows down when ANNIE and BYRON SLYTER married, sometime between 1910 and 1918.

ANNIE is listed in the 1930 census with her husband and children still living in San Francisco but at 93 Justin Street.

ANNIE’S husband BRYON SLYTER died 28 February 1939 according to the

Name:
Byron J Slyter
Birth Year:
abt 1882
Death Date:
28 Feb 1939
Age at Death:
57
Death Place:
San Francisco, California, USA

ANNIE is in the 1940 California Census still living at 93 Justin Street with her two daughters, ELIZABETH and ANNIE both single.

I found that ANNIE died 25 August 1941 from the California Death Index and also from her obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle.

At the time of her death, as indicated in the obituary, ANNIE’S daughter ELIZABETH has not married. Her other daughter is listed as MRS. ALICE GIBBONS.  I researched this daughter and found a marriage record for her to a MYLOW PATTERSON.

I never found a marriage record for ALICE and someone named Gibbons.  I did find a divorce record for an ALICE GIBBONS and a WILLIAM GIBBONS filed 20 July 1943 and granted 28 July 1943 in San Francisco.  If this is the right ALICE, she was married sometime between the 1940 census taken in April 1940 and this divorce in July 1943.  This might explain why she went back to using her maiden name.
